Renovated Pauley Pavilion to Feature Daktronics Video Display

08/17/2012
Daktronics, Inc. of Brookings, S.D., announced today that the University of California, Los Angeles has asked the company to design, manufacture and install an integrated video and scoring system as part of the renovations of Pauley Pavilion, scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2012.

The project includes the design and manufacture of a centerhung display system, ribbon displays and corner scoring displays.

“Daktronics worked with us throughout the design process to ensure the look and feel of the digital technology matched the UCLA brand,” said Nick Ammazzalorso, Executive Director of Athletic Communications at UCLA. “We wanted a visual centerpiece that would reflect UCLA whether the display be on or off. Daktronics hit our design goals perfectly.”

The centerhung design features four 10mm video displays measuring 12 feet high and 16 feet wide with a digital ring display measuring more than two feet tall and 27 feet wide. The main displays are capable of showing one large image, highlighting live video and instant replays, or being divided into separate windows to show a variety of vivid graphics, colorful animations, scoring information, up-to-the-minutes statistics, and sponsor advertisements withoutstanding brightness and wide-angle visibility. The digital ring provides the opportunity to showcase sponsors throughout events and provide up-to-the-minute statistics and game information.

The centerhung design also includes a number of static locations for UCLA branding and additional sponsor logos. These include Edwin W Pauley Pavilion channel letters on top with corner locations for sponsors. UCLA logos adorn the corner shrouding and the bottom of the centerhung. Below the digital ring is a static ring for additional sponsor visibility.

“Pauley Pavilion is a marquee venue with many events and tours in the building that may not always require the use of the digital technology. However, we wanted to make sure our premier partners and university still received visibility during these events,” said Ammazzalorso.

Surrounding the seating bowl in Pauley Pavilion will be a 360-degree ribbon display measuring almost three feet high to showcase sponsors, cheer graphics and other information. In the corners, the ribbon display enlarges to five feet high and sixty feet wide to show scoring and timing information throughout the game.

Daktronics will also be including its powerful Show Control System with this installation. Touted by experts as the best in the industry, the system provides a combination of display control software, world-class video processing, data integration and playback hardware that forms a user-friendly production solution. “This is a great project for UCLA and the digital technology will fit in perfectly with the new renovations,” said Robin Hall, Daktronics Region Manager. “It is a great opportunity to continue working with UCLA and we look forward to the opening of the new Pauley Pavilion.”

Pauley Pavilion has existing displays in the arena that will stay with the renovation including digital vomitory displays and courtside scorers tables installed in 2008. Throughout the athletic facilities on the Los Angeles campus, Daktronics displays keep fans informed at aquatics, tennis, baseball and softball games and events.

Daktronics LED video and messaging display technology offers a long lifetime with minimal maintenance and low power consumption, providing value and excitement for years to come.
